The role of system administrator has changed dramatically. The structure of systems varies from company to company so system administrators are required to create their own tools. James Attanasio from FPS Social Security in Belgium has won the second annual SysAdmin All-Star Award. This announcement was made by Ipswitch Inc.’s Network Management Division, developer of the WhatsUp Gold suite of innovative IT management solutions.
According to a press release, competition was run to coincide with the worldwide System Administrator Appreciation Day on Friday 29th July. Ipswitch (News - Alert) awarded Attanasio an Apple iPad 2 as this year’s SysAdmin All-Star.
“We use Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold to monitor both our headquarters in Brussels and our 19 remote sites spread all over Belgium 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” explained Attanasio. “Our reliance on WhatsUp Gold has increased in the past year, as we have been setting up a wireless and VoIP infrastructure to enable our staff the flexibility to work from anywhere in the building or remotely from a different location such as their home office.”
“Our VoIP system relies on multiple critical devices such as access points, routers, voice gateways and switches. We cannot afford any of those devices to go down, so we rely on Ipswitch’s WhatsUp Gold to warn us via email and SMS if anything is reaching a threshold of 90% utilisation and in danger of going down,” he added.
Attanasio has been working as a network administrator for FPS Social Security in Belgium for six years. Along with his team, Attanasio is in charge of the management of a large and disparate network infrastructure of 25 Cisco (News

Ipswitch Network Management Division has introduced WhatsUp Gold v15, a milestone that marked changes to WhatsUp Gold in nearly a decade with significant enhancements and additions, making IT monitoring and management faster, simpler and more secure. WhatsUp Gold v15 delivers an optimal user experience and allows IT professionals to have complete protection and control over their IT environments.
