A recent report from Juniper Research (News - Alert) reveals the market for security software to protect mobile devices including tablets, smartphones and feature phones will reach almost $3.7 billion by 2016.
The research also found that enterprise and business sales will account for almost 69 percent of the mobile security software market by 2016.
Juniper’s new Mobile Security research identifies the demand for mobile security software has been on the rise because of the vulnerability of mobile devices to hacking and other forms of malware attacks. Businesses have started spending more on mobile device security applications as they become a critical part of enterprise policy.
However, the results of the Mobile Security research reveals currently less than 1 in 20 smartphones and tablets have third party security software installed in them, despite a steady increase in threats.
The research agency predicts that mobile security products will enter the mainstream by late 2013, crossing $1 Billion; and by 2016, approximately 277 million mobile devices will have some kind of protection installed in them.
Juniper Research recommends that Enterprise and IT managers audit the security status of their corporate mobile device deployments and take remedial action where necessary.
“Enterprise users are in the front line against potential security breaches through insufficient mobile security and companies need to incorporate mobile network connected devices into the corporate network since this is the easiest way to enforce policies and to audit such devices,” said report author Nitin Bhas, in a statement.
In future, as more tablets enter the enterprise space, the proportion of tablets featuring security products will also increase and overtake the percentage of smartphones protected. In May, a related research from TechNavio forecast that Global Mobile Security Software (News - Alert) market will see increasing growth with growth rates much higher than the overall Security Software market.
According to TechNavio, currently the most notable drivers for this market are e-mail spam blocking, anti-virus, and malware removal. However, the trend is expected to change with data loss prevention expected to emerge as the most notable driver by 2014.
