Avanan Makes Enterprise Security Solutions Work in the Cloud

Avanan made a global splash today, exiting stealth mode with a one-click solution for applying advanced security technologies to cloud and SaaS (News - Alert) applications and data. The new company, which is based in New York City with research and development in Israel, aims to make legacy enterprise security solutions available for easy deployment in the cloud.

The Avanan Cloud Governance Platform protects data and apps on AWS, Google (News - Alert), Office 365, Box and other cloud storage by enabling enterprise security solutions from Check Point, Symantec and other top vendors to run in the cloud. The platform uses a secure, out-of-band API to let users directly connect to SaaS vendors with the click of a button, directly through cloud infrastructure. Users can then deploy important security features like malware scanning, advanced threat protection, encryption, shadow IT detection and more.

“We came from the world of network security, where our customers told us that their data was moving to the cloud, but the security offered by ‘cloud access security brokers (CASB)’ was limited to a few young startups with immature and proprietary technologies,” said Gil Friedrich, co-founder and CEO of Avanan. “As we have seen in security, no single vendor has ever been able to provide best of breed in all technologies, so, we set out to solve the problem with a completely different approach -- creating a platform that interoperates any security with any cloud.”

Avanan has four co-founders, hailing from Israel’s ForeScout Technologies, a major player in the network access control space.  That combined experience has been a boost for Avanan’s offering, which is already in use by more than 20 customers including enterprises, universities and hospitals.

In addition to letting users deploy a massive host of security features, Avanan’s cloud platform also enables granular share management for visibility and application of rules across all cloud applications. The platform also offers shadow cloud visibility and helps prevent accidental sharing by monitoring all policy changes and sending the appropriate alerts and messages. Additional features include a comprehensive compliance audit to help meet specific government and industry regulations, and collaboration management to securely connect employees with partners outside of an organization.

“When we met Avanan, it was the first cloud security that finally made sense,” said Tal Slobodkin, managing partner at StageOne Ventures, an Israeli venture capital firm that helped launch the company along with Magma VC. “Because it relies on best-of-breed technologies, out of the gate it provides a level of cloud security that is better than all the existing solutions. We believe that this is the future of security.”
