Altiscale: The Big Data Utility

Big Data and analytics are transforming the way business is done. Throw in the cloud, and the future is now. As adoption of Big Data and analytics solutions grows, so too does the innovation in the space. Big Data-as-a-Service is a burgeoning area in this space and a prominent player is Silicon Valley’s Altiscale.

At TMC’s (News - Alert) Editor Day Silicon Valley, Altiscale’s Chief Operating Officer Mike Maciag took some time to show and explain how its Data-as-a-Service offering allows firms to not worry about the heavy lifting involved in data and as he put it, “Deal with all the niceities that the job is running so customers can focus on the results,” or as Altiscale’s website proclaims, “Big Data without all the swearing.”

A self-proclaimed “Big Data utility,” the firm provides a complete working solution, and when purchased it is delivered instantly.

Altiscale’s history is intertwined the roots of the Big Data and analytics space, as its founder and CEO Raymie Stata was a key cog in the development of Hadoop during his time at Yahoo. Stata was part of each iteration, improvement and generation after generation of analytical innovation. He was also able to step back and see the cloud as the future, having relationships with cloud era founders they turn to Stata and Altiscale—for example, Amazon leverages the service instead of in-house development. While many firms see analytics as a golden brick road to success this type of expertise allows Altiscale to be “the man behind the curtain” noted Macaig.

Macaig illustrated that Spark is a big piece to this startup’s success. He explained, “It puts a sharp point on what we do.” Altiscale runs the three most recent versions of Sparks simultaneously, as to not force customers to worry about interoperability.

The firm reports growth of 40 percent quarter over quarter, and Macaig attributes this to its customers. Many start out small, and typically come back for larger solutions after experiencing the benefits. Did I mention the company has a Net Promoter score of 60?

After launching in 2014 after about two years in development, Altiscale’s Data-as-a-Service offering is experiencing tangible success. Macaig made the comparison to the Dow Scrubbing Bubbles commercial from years back “We work hard so you don’t have to.” With so much to be concerned with at the enterprise level, this Big Data utility is ready to do the hard work; you just have to let them.
