Verizon Enterprise Solutions Expands Availability of SDN Service

Verizon (News - Alert) Enterprise Solutions, a division of Verizon that offers software-defined networking (SDN) to businesses, recently announced the expansion of its services for greater public sector availability.

Specifically, Verizon has expanded its Secure Cloud Interconnect service that gives businesses access to their own private SDNs – all accessible through a centralized, Web-based portal. The service now boasts connectivity in the Asia Pacific, North and South America, Europe, and Latin America geographical regions. It also supports a number of cloud types and can connect to other third-party cloud vendor platforms and data centers.

Mike Maiorana, the senior vice president of public sector markets at Verizon Enterprise Solutions, commented that the public sector relies on secure networking that is easy to set up and easy to manage.

“Public sector organizations across the U.S. rely on Verizon for secure and reliable networking,” Maiorana said. “Our Secure Cloud Interconnect service builds on Verizon’s strengths and addresses many of the barriers impacting public sector cloud adoption, including security, scalability, flexibility, and control. Secure Cloud Interconnect delivers the connectivity our public sector clients require to support workload and application deployments across multiple cloud and data center providers.”

For the U.S. Federal Government, greater availability of Secure Cloud Interconnect will come as part of the existing Verizon- and Microsoft (News - Alert)-provided Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program-certified (FedRAMP) cloud environment. Through that federal program, Verizon has certified that the security features of its cloud are sound and that government entities can feel confident in its use. Those entities can grab SDN through Networx Universal and Enterprise contracts.

A number of other government and public entities will be able to take advantage of that same security, even though they may not, by regulation, require it. Many state and local governments do not typically require FedRAMP-certified services. However, they and education and public safety organizations could benefit from protections that FedRAMP offers.

Overall, any large-scale entities that desire access to secure, reliable, high-performing networks could begin their search for available SDN. This offering from Verizon promises easy access to all those features. If it is available in their areas, many more public sector entities may want to consider Verizon for the next step in their network developments.
