Most Organizations Are Not Taking Advantage of PaaS and Other Cloud Agility Tools

A majority of businesses are placing themselves at a competitive disadvantage by overestimating how agile they are at developing and launching new applications. A new study from Oracle (News - Alert) shows that businesses believe they are agile, yet fail when it comes to flexibly managing their workloads or being able to speedily develop, test and launch new apps.

The “Oracle Cloud Agility” study also found that most businesses are not aware of how cloud computing technologies like PaaS can help with these challenges while giving them a boost over competitors. The company queried employees at large global enterprises and found that while 64 percent of workers believe their business is agile, they are unclear when it comes to the technologies that facilitate agility.

Specifically, Oracle found that PaaS is not being leveraged to its full extent, with nearly half of businesses not able to shift workloads among public, private or hybrid clouds, or not knowing if it is even possible given their current architectures. That lack of awareness is ultimately impacting how quickly new applications can be developed, tested and deployed, putting organizations at a significant competitive disadvantage.

“Businesses clearly know agility holds the key to their success, but there is an awareness gap around exactly how this agility can be realized through the right technology investments,” said Robert Shimp, group vice president, Oracle. “Today, PaaS can enable businesses to build new applications quickly – in as little as two weeks – allowing them to launch new internal and customer-facing applications rapidly. This capability allows organizations to respond almost immediately to market conditions and get their products and services to customers ahead of the competition.”

Of the businesses queried by Oracle, only half claimed they could develop, test and deploy new business apps for mobile devices within six months. Only 30 percent claimed to be able to do it within one month, pointing to a pretty major disconnect between the cloud development technologies available and how they are actually being used.

”Yes, the cost savings delivered by PaaS are important, but of greater importance is its ability to help businesses reduce application development timeframes and more easily tailor and integrate third-party Software-as-a-Service apps into their business, allowing them to more effectively address customer demand,” added Shimp.
