LaunchKey, a company that has made a name for itself as a mobile authentication platform released the findings of recent survey earlier this week. That survey found that password-based authentication is not capable of meeting demands of information security. Because of this factor, the survey found that a massive 84 percent of respondents are in support of throwing away the practice of passwords altogether. That particular number of people certainly seems to indicate that the world is ready for a change. The fact that 76 percent of those who took part in the survey feel as though they would like to see a new kind of verification backs that up.
"Today, the pace of security breaches directly related to stolen passwords and bypassed authentication is increasing along with the severity of their consequences," said Geoff Sanders, CEO, LaunchKey. "Passwords are inherently insecure as a method of authentication, and their efficacy relies on end users, developers, system administrators, and the applications themselves, all of which are vulnerable to a wide variety of attack vectors currently being exploited by cyberattacks around the world.”
Biometric security is one way in which people are moving although there simply aren’t enough devices out there that actually use that kind of security. Furthermore, this is problematic considering there are very many other ways to keep data safe that don’t entail hardware overhauls.
The survey also measured people’s trust of public institutions and 52 percent of those who responded said they don’t trust businesses to keep their data safe.
The bottom line is that while passwords aren’t keeping people safe anymore, the alternatives that are widely used aren’t that much better right now. Finding an alternative that could become popular would be a big step toward leading the market in the next era of the Internet.
