EdgeConneX to Host MASS IX Node at Boston Edge Data Center

EdgeConneX, a company specializing in hosting solutions at the edge of the network, has announced a partnership with the Massachusetts Internet Exchange (MASS IX). Mass IX will build a new remote node at the Boston Edge Data Center.

“The addition of a MASS IX node inside our Boston EDC will enable EdgeConneX to provide customers with a new access point to multiple MASS IX core switches, offering superior route diversity, ultra-low latency IP connectivity and access to participating networks,” EdgeConneX chief commercial officer Clint Heiden (News - Alert) said.

The node will make Internet service faster in the Boston area by reducing latency by having one fewer hop for packets to go over. The node will come online in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Internet exchange providers are what make the Internet the Internet by providing places for different providers to interconnect their networks.

EdgeConneX will provide a secure connection between the Mass IX node in its datacenter and the MASS IX core switches. Service providers, carriers, Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and others will be able to access Internet peering, IP Transit, Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and other cloud solutions.

The Internet’s resilience in the face of heavy loads has been attributed to the different routes that packets can take over the network. That’s why Internet connections have been represented as clouds in network diagrams for so long.

Now that providers have another way to interconnect, their connections should be even more reliable as more users make heavy demands on their networks. Those push notifications on people’s smartphones might be small, but they add up with hundreds or thousands of users each day making requests.

Exchanges like MASS IX are the key to maintaining reliable services under increasing loads.

“MASS IX is excited to be accessible in the EdgeConneX Boston Edge Data Center, eliminating unnecessary backhauls to large cities in the Northeast, such as New York City, while increasing network performance and security for customers,” James Jun, director of MASS IX, said. “The Boston EDC is an ideal location for us to extend our presence, offering our suite of connectivity options to the Internet ecosystem, while furthering our shared commitment to improve Internet connectivity at the Edge.”
