The Time is Ripe for Cloud Migration

The cloud is a curious proposition for some, for others it is an opportunity to evolve the way services, software and infrastructure are maintained, managed and deployed. It would appear that cloud computing has reached the “tipping point,” at least according to ProfitBricks’ William Toll (News - Alert) who believes 2014 has set the tone for a very cloudy future.

At the recent Cloud Expo ProfitBricks’ Vice President of Marketing sat down to talk cloud: yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Toll views 2014 as a pivotal year for the cloud, as he believes several things changed last year that make the cloud more accessible to corporate IT and solution providers.

“Cloud computing crossed the chasm,” Toll proclaimed. He notes that early adoption in the cloud was all about startups. Inventors are willing to take the risk and commit completely to the cloud. And, developers were early adopters that drove and influenced deployments and innovation. The code was easy to write because it was simple. Amazon’s cloud caused early issues for developers due to lack of persistent storage and on the networking side forced new applications to be programmed in a way conducive with cloud model.

According to the IDC (News - Alert), 85 percent of workloads are on-premises. If you were curious, that’s 8.6 million data centers. On-premises hardware can be time, space and cost consuming.

Today, Toll notes we hear a lot less talk about cloud security. We are no longer hearing about lower level infrastructure, which for ProfitBricks (News - Alert) is a very good thing, as according to Toll, this is where, “service providers like ProfitBricks live and breathe.” Toll continued to say that as opposed to years gone by where security was a major concern, today the conversation has shifted to a healthy level of trust in the cloud.

Today’s second generation cloud is a lot more flexible. Anything that could be done in a data center can still be done in the cloud. Previously re-development was required when adapting to cloud standards, but today this is no longer needed for deployment.

The third point Toll illuminated was the quality of conversation between C-level executives and IT teams. A mutual respect exists, and C-level executives now understand the cloud far better. The two teams can now talk together. Today, there is an understanding that an IT department can bring revenue back into a firm, and especially with all the overwhelming IoT hype the time is right to move forward into the cloud.

ProfitBricks is an IaaS provider that provides companies with a second generation cloud that looks and feels like real physical servers and networks. It is extremely user friendly, scalable without reboot and is a result of solving the issues of first generation cloud technology. As one can see below, it is as simple as “pulling up the data center.”

Toll said, “managed service providers and corporate IT teams in 2015 should feel free to look at cloud computing providers that have solved the problems of the first generation of the cloud and have made migrating to the cloud more painless.”

The cloud is not something to fear, especially as innovation and development have created a safe, reliable and user friendly environment to conduct business. Cloud migration is just like learning to swim, the only way is to dive in.
