IBM Acquires Hybrid Cloud Provider Blue Box

IBM is one of those companies that does plenty when it comes to innovating all on its own, but the firm learned long ago that sometimes the best strategy is to buy companies that specialize in one area or another. That is apparently the impetus behind the firm announcing the purchase of Blue Box (News - Alert)—a managed private cloud company that has a platform built on OpenStack.

Blue Box is a Seattle-based company that gives businesses a simple private cloud as a service platform. The company has made a success out of giving customers the ability to more easily deploy their workloads across the hybrid cloud environments that are becoming more popular all the time.

“IBM (News - Alert) is dedicated to helping our clients migrate to the cloud in an open, secure, data rich environment that meet their current and future business needs,” said IBM General Manager of Cloud Services Jim Comfort in a recent statement announcing the purchase. “The acquisition of Blue Box accelerates IBM’s open cloud strategy making it easier for our clients to move to data and applications across clouds and adopt hybrid cloud environments.”

Enterprise level companies are working overtime these days in order to take advantage of all different types of cloud providers that cover a massive number of different workloads. The acquisition by IBM shows how much the company values being able to deliver flexible cloud computing models that make it that much easier for customers to move data and applications across clouds.

Blue Box, in particular is able to offer services such as a speeded up delivery of applications and data through simplified and consistent access to public, dedicated and local cloud infrastructures. The company is also able to support infrastructure services across hybrid cloud environments. Best of all, the firm is able to offer a single management tool that is used by OpenStack-based clouds regardless of where those cloud ecosystems are based.
