QLogic and Cavium Joint Infrastructure to Accelerate Cloud Storage Applications

The migration to the cloud is being carried out by organizations big and small to take advantage of a technology that is allowing greater agility and flexibility. Not having to deal with the limitations of legacy on-premises infrastructure is more cost effective and efficient. With so many adopters, service providers must implement new technologies in order to address the volume that is entering into the marketplace. A new collaboration between QLogic and Cavium will deliver accelerated performance for enterprises and cloud storage applications by combining technologies from both companies.

As a global supplier of high-performance network infrastructure solutions, QLogic Corp. (News - Alert) announced the development of a joint solution with Cavium Inc., provider of secure and intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, wired and wireless networking. The new solution will combine the QLogic 25GbE RDMA NICs and fiber channel adapters with Cavium's 48 core workload optimized ThunderX ARMv8-A processor to improve the flexibility and total cost of ownership for enterprise and hyper- scale cloud deployments.

The exponential data growth that is taking place today around the world requires accelerated network performance at lower costs for enterprise data centers and cloud environments. While many organizations still have 10Gb Ethernet, the technology requires twice as many deployments to keep up with the required network bandwidth. With 25GbE, a single-lane connection like 10GbE technology can deliver 2.5 times faster performance.

For its part, Cavium is providing the ThunderX product family of 64-bit ARMv8 data center and cloud processors with industry-leading SoC performance and high degree of integration. The processors offer best-in-class performance for value and energy with custom cores, single and dual socket configurations, very high memory bandwidth, large memory capacity, integrated hardware accelerators, fully virtualized core and IO, scalable Ethernet fabric and feature rich I/O’s.

Some of the benefits the joint solutions will provide include:

  • Up to 2X (News - Alert) system performance improvement compared to scale-out DAS based architectures,
  • Ability to independently scale compute and storage resources to petabyte-class databases and beyond, and
  • Significantly reduced latency for distributed file systems accessing data over an RDMA-enabled fabric—without burdening the compute infrastructure.

“The data center infrastructure of the future needs to be intelligent and adaptive to application workload requirements,” said Manoj Gujral, vice president of marketing, Ethernet Products, QLogic. “Our joint development with Cavium will result in solutions that combine the high-performance and outstanding TCO of Thunder-X server and storage system on chip (SoC) processors with QLogic 25GbE RNICs.”

Today’s networks are having to get smarter and more sophisticated in order to deal with the huge loads of traffic. Being able to manage all this traffic requires innovative technology capable of delivering improved efficiencies, better performance and the flexibility to adapt to the changing environment. The new collaboration between QLogic and Cavium addresses many of the key challenges operators are facing with a cost-effective solution that is ready to be implemented.
