OPSWAT Tackles Email Malware with New Agent for Metascan Threat Prevention Solution

The number of cloud-based services and applications being used by small businesses and enterprises alike has caused malware rates to skyrocket, with businesses scrambling to protect their sensitive data and their users. In fact, a recent survey from managed IT infrastructure provider OPSWAT shows that more than half of respondents had an email malware breach in the last 18 months.

The company is responding to customer needs and has announced a new Mail Agent for its Metascan threat prevention solution. The new offering, which runs on Microsoft (News - Alert) Exchange Server, may be used with the Metascan multi-anti-malware scanning solution. It expands the OPSWAT suite of threat protection technologies to cover email-based threats, one of the most common and malicious forms of entry.

The new solution is a result of the company’s recent acquisition of Red Earth Software, a specialist in email security solutions for Exchange Server. Red Earth specializes in policy enforcement tools with an emphasis on industry compliance and security issues. The enhancements to Metascan using Red Earth technology are just the first of a series of additions OPSWAT is planning throughout the year.

“Using anti-malware multi-scanning is essential for email security since it significantly increases the malware detection rates and reduces the vulnerabilities created by a specific antivirus engine’s limitations,” said Mike Spykerman, vice president of product management at OPSWAT.

“The addition of email security, along with our server, web and endpoint security, has brought us another step closer towards reaching our goal of offering a complete solution for securing data work flow from all entry points,” added Benny Czarny (News - Alert), CEO at OPSWAT.

Features of the new Mail Agent for Metascan include the ability to intercept all incoming and outgoing email attachments on Exchange Server as well as quickly scan them using up to 30 anti-malware engines. If a threat is detected, emails can be moved to quarantine to await further inspection. Metascan licenses now include a Mail Agent license for up to 25 users, and additional users may be purchased as well.
