Opengear Keeps Moving Forward with New Ideas

To the ordinary lay person, a phrase like “out of band technology” might not be that easily decipherable. But to someone like Shirish Nilekar, Director of Product Strategy & Management at Opengear (News - Alert), the phrase means everything.

“Opengear provides enterprise customers with next generation smart solutions for managing and protecting their critical IT and communications infrastructure,” the company explains on its homepage. “We provide our customers with the security, the automation and the resilience necessary to operate efficiently, reduce costs and ensure business continuity.”

Taking that promise to the next level, Opengear is has come up with some new offerings that are sure to catch the eyes of IT managers everywhere.

Nilekar sat down at the recent ITEXPO show in Miami with TMC Executive Editor Paula Bernier (News - Alert), and expounded on what Opengear has been doing these days. He was asked specifically by Bernier what “smart out of band technology” actually was.

“Smart out of band technology allows you to manage your entire IT infrastructure,” he explained in the video interview, “including servers, switches, firewalls, etc. It also allows you to monitor the environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, smoke alarms, sensors and more. It gives you complete control over your IT environment.”

Obviously, an offering like that would be invaluable to anyone in IT. Being able to know in an instant the status of your systems enables you to to proactively anticipate any problems before they can get out of hand.

Bernier also brought up another term she’d heard in reference to Opengear, “failover to cellular,” and asked Nilekar to expand on that as well.

“Failover to cellular is when a device can be accessed in a cellular manner,” he said. “Any failover allows a remote site to use this connectivity for backup protection.”
