Study: Certified Workstation Market Strong in Q3

A new report by industry analyst IDC (News - Alert) says that the certified workstation market is alive and growing. IDC’s report said that the certified workstation market is actually showing some real momentum in 2014 with the third quarter of this year up 7.6 percent over the same period from a year ago. IDC points out this marks the sixth straight quarter this particular market has seen positive growth. The company did point out that the growth rate in the third quarter was slightly slowed compared to the previous quarter, which saw growth in the market of 12 percent.

When talking about regions of the world that are seeing the most growth, the Middle East and Africa took the crown with the market growing by 39.3 percent year over year. Latin America didn’t trail that number by much and came in with a growth rate of 31.6 percent. The United States and Europe dominated the market when it came to market shares, with 39.2 percent and 25.1 percent respectively but their growth rates were quite a bit slower (6.7 and 2.1 percent.)

"The overall workstation market is expected to continue growing," Ebenezer Obeng-Nyarkoh, Senior Research Analyst, Worldwide Trackers Group said in a statement pointing to the new study. "And customer demand for workstations, as an alternative to PCs, will be driven by performance, graphic capability, and reliability."

When it comes to companies that are reaping the most benefit from this growth spurt, Hewlett-Packard (News - Alert) held the top spot yet again. HP currently owns a 45.8 percent share of the workstation market, and that number is despite a 1.4 percent drop, year over year. Dell came in second, despite projections that it might actually struggle this quarter. The company saw a slight gain in the total market share and currently holds 36.6 percent of the total market.
