Nedbank Builds Online Trust with Gemalto's PKI Solution

The convenience of online banking cannot be denied, but as banks increase the number of their online offerings they need to provide a framework of trust online so that customers feel safe and secure in the digital world. That’s why Nedbank, a commercial bank in South Africa deployed Gemalto’s (News - Alert) new  PKI solution, built on its field-proven Ezio technology.

"In an effort to offer best-in-class Wholesale Banking solutions to our business customers, we have deployed Gemalto's brand new PKI solution, launched as the Plug and Transact TokenTM,” said Fred Swanepoel, chief information officer of Nedbank Ltd.

Regarded as a one-stop shop for e-Banking security, Gemalto will give Nedbank the opportunity to offer customers unmatched online transaction security and convenience.  The Ezio Plug and Transact is stated to work with any PC and requires only a PIN to log in. Users just have to plug in a USB key, review, click, and sign.

The key, which is PKI enabled is integrated with a smart card and built on Ezio technology. When the key is inserted into the PC, it launches users into a safe zone- a protected online environment where they can conduct online transactions safely and securely. In case the connection platform is vulnerable, the Ezio e-Banking PKI solution ensures session integrity.

"We have implemented and operated Gemalto's PKI solutions for over ten years, with a very high level of success in providing secure electronic banking solutions," said Swanepoel.

In addition, Gemalto also offers consulting services and manages tokens on behalf of the bank, remotely.

"By outsourcing its entire token management system, Nedbank benefits from significant cost reduction in terms of initial investment and running expenses compared to an in-house solution," observed Swanepoel.

Gemalto seeks to differentiate itself by offering secure solutions with enhanced client usability, improved tracking and business information and Nedbank has been pioneering its e-Banking solutions for a long time.

"There has always been high demand from Nedbank to pioneer our eBanking solutions, with each trial resulting in a full-scale deployment," said Håkan Nordfjell, senior vice president, e-Banking and e-Commerce at Gemalto.

With no new hardware to buy and no software installation, Gemalto’s e-Banking solution appears to be the most cost-efficient way to future-proof online banking.
