Wheelings & Dealings: Cloud-Based Authentication Services Provider Duo Security Scores $12 Million Funding Round

Cloud-based authentication services provider Duo Security has brought in a $12 million Series B funding round. The company plans to use the funds to better address a variety of security challenges their business customers face in trying to secure users against breaches.

Duo provides a two-factor, cloud-based authentication service used by more than 5,000 organizations to protect distributed users and infrastructure. The solution utilizes patented technology and drop-in integrations so customers may easily use it with their existing application login workflow. It supports just about all platforms, applications and devices and Duo provides a Developer API for enhanced integration.

The service is offered on an as-a-service basis so that customers only pay for what they need. And, its multi-tenant cloud architecture enables easy scalability from one to millions of users without any additional hardware or training required.

"Smartphone proliferation, the shift in IT environments to the cloud, and business users' increased expectations for consumer-grade enterprise software products give Duo Security the opportunity to lead and change the face of the security market in a post-firewall world," said Matt Cohler, general partner at Benchmark and Duo Security board member. Benchmark led the funding round along with Google (News - Alert) Ventures, True Ventures and Radar Partners.

"We've always had ambitions beyond two-factor authentication to build a unified security platform that empowers the mid-market to appropriately protect themselves," said Jon Oberheide, CTO and co-founder of Duo Security. "We're on a mission to democratize effective security technologies for everyone, not just the Fortune 500."

The company is well on its way to doing that through an affordable and flexible cloud-based model. The service already works with a host of cloud applications including Salesforce, Google Apps and box, and works with platforms from Cisco, Citrix, Fortinet (News - Alert), Juniper, Microsoft and WordPress, among others.
