TwinStrata Implements CloudArray File Sharing, Data Protection Solution for Florida Water Agency

TwinStrata (News - Alert) a specialist in cloud-integrated storage solutions has implemented its CloudArray solution for St. Johns River Water Management District, one among five water management districts in Florida.

Nicos Vekiarides (News - Alert), CEO of TwinStrata, said, “Organizations like the District don’t just need cloud backup or file sharing, they need a comprehensive storage strategy that can evolve as their requirements change. We’re excited that the District has partnered with us to modernize their storage infrastructure to meet not only today's needs, but also tomorrow’s.”

The TwinStrata CloudArray will enable multi-site file sharing, provide offsite data protection and help the water agency in disaster recovery. Essentially, CloudArray will be replacing the tape backup system that was in use before, as it was very expensive to backup 80 terabytes (TBs) of data on tape.

The labor intensive system cost the agency about $150,000 every year as external service providers were assigned the job of managing, storing, retrieving and maintaining the offsite tape library. The new implementation is expected to save on time also, in addition to deploying a robust offsite data protection solution to take care of data recovery in case a disaster strikes.

The CloudArray solution was selected after a thorough study of various options. Most hardware solutions that help in site replication were very expensive and most cloud storage gateways involved heavy initial investments. The large cloud storage deployments were priced on a per appliance basis. As the agency required four appliances for its three major service centers and a field station, the hardware-based deployment was not feasible.

The robust file-sharing capabilities of CloudArray and its in-cloud snapshots enable the District water agency to retain, read, and write access to the files. The facility is extended to its geographically distributed offices also, which eliminates the need to back up its file systems on tape.

The new backup strategy has helped the agency make backups very quickly which was usually a  day-long manual process. The automatic system now allows system administrators to focus their energies on supporting and advancing more critical strategic IT initiatives, said officials.

The water agency comprises of three major service centers, five field stations, and a primary data center, all of which share files across a single 10TB CIFS share. This may require a week to back up using traditional methods. The TwinStarta CloudArray will now help streamline the back up of over seven million files in Google (News - Alert) Cloud Storage, which can be easily accessed via CIFS and NFS through CloudArray.
