HughesON Managed Security Solutions Now Backed by Virtualization Tech

Nowadays, businesses are committed to storing, protecting and powering critical customer resources, and thus are placing great emphasis on building up the most advanced, secure, redundant data center infrastructures.

Hughes Network Systems (News - Alert), LLC (Hughes) is one such company working to build a robust network that provides highly secure access to the data center, the Internet and SaaS (News - Alert) applications via both customers' and employees' wireless devices.

The company has recently announced an enhancement to its HughesON Managed Security Solutions that utilizes virtualization technology in its family of HR4x00 Branch Gateways. The new Virtual Domain (VDOM) technology allows enterprises to have a secured access to data center by dividing the Hughes HR4700 Branch Gateway into multiple virtual security devices with completely separate firewalls, routing, VPNs and other security capabilities.

The HR4700 Branch Gateway with the VDOM feature brings efficient security from Fortinet (News - Alert) with routing and broadband WAN optimization. It also allows organizations to merge all their security gateways inexpensively into a single solution at each branch, for Internet access and for secure communications to corporate data centers.

"As distributed enterprises evolve from a corporate controlled environment to a more complex heterogeneous environment, the security challenges multiply exponentially," said Sampath Ramaswami (News - Alert), senior director of Strategic Planning at Hughes. "Our new VDOM capability meets these challenges by enabling secure partitioning of different segments at the branch, such as Point of Sale, enterprise and third-party devices."

Headquartered outside Washington, D.C., in Germantown, Md., Hughes operates sales and support offices worldwide, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation, a global provider of satellite operations and digital TV solutions.

The company has till date shipped four million plus systems to customers in over 100 countries, representing approximately 50 percent market share. Its products employ global standards approved by the TIA, ETSI (News - Alert) and ITU organizations, including IPoS/DVB-S2, RSM-A, and GMR-1.
