SmartDrive Video Safety System to Enhance Efficiency on UTA Buses and Paratransit Vehicles

SmartDrive Systems, a provider of driving safety and fuel management solutions, will be delivering its comprehensive, video-based operator performance and safety program to the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) to be deployed in about 600 buses and paratransit vehicles.

Steve Mitgang, CEO of SmartDrive said, “The UTA has long been an industry leader in the use of cutting-edge technologies and services for safety, operational efficiency and optimal rider experience.”

It is expected that the deployment of the SmartDrive safety solution for UTA, will be completed by mid-2014. UTA can then use in-vehicle recorders to capture video on a daily basis on its buses and paratransit vehicles. The recorded event clips will be first assessed by the SmartDrive review center where SmartDrive’s video analysis experts will review, score and prioritize videos that can be used for coaching.

In addition, the video analysis, predictive analytics and personalized performance program provided by the solution enables fleets to improve driving skills and reduce operating costs. The easy-to-use managed service helps commercial fleets and transit agency operators to access and self-manage driving performance anytime and from anywhere. The driving performance insight and analysis delivered by SmartDrive also helps save fuel, expenses and lives.

The SmartDrive safety program has been adopted by 26 other transit agencies other than UTA in the United States. The list includes LA Metro, DART, Nassau County and Veolia Transportation. The safety solutions have also been installed in over 10,000 transit vehicles to help agencies cost effectively protect vehicle operators and the public.

“We are proud to have been chosen for this project by such a prominent transit innovator and view this as validation of the positive impact our video-based safety program can have on agencies,” Mitgang said.

In 2013, SmartDrive added active safety system data elements to its SmartDrive Safety program via direct integration to its data and video event recording platform. This industry-first integration expands the capabilities of the SmartDrive platform by capturing data generated from a carrier’s third-party active safety systems and intelligently determining the difference between a high-risk and low-risk event.
