Earlier this month, a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack went after a website in France. It was measured at between 325Gbps and 400Gbps, which led industry observers to conclude it was the most powerful DDoS attack ever. Similar attacks could occur elsewhere, soon.
Not only do these DDoS attacks hurt websites and related operations. DDoS attacks hurt financially. About half of them will last at least a day. They lead to losses of $2.1 million for every four hours of downtime, according to one estimate.
Network firewalls alone are not enough to protect against the attack. Considering the risk of DDoS attacks, ACG Research concludes that a “comprehensive multilayer approach” is needed to achieve mitigation.
One company, F5 Networks (News - Alert), which focuses on Application Delivery Networking (ADN), provides a comprehensive DDoS mitigation solution. It provides intelligent traffic management, and applies it to a two-tier (L3-4 and L7) model. The result is multilayer protection for applications, domain name system, network and SSL (secure sockets layer).
When it comes to financial impact, in a recent white paper, “Business Case for a DDoS Consolidated Solution,” ACG Research found that the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the F5 solution was 81 percent lower over five years compared to the solutions from products offered by leading DDoS mitigation vendors. In addition, capital expenses (CapEx) were 80 percent lower and operations expenses (OpEx) were 82 percent lower – in the case of F5.
The F5 solution includes increased scalability, and DDoS protection is provided for all layers – network, DNS, SSL and application. In addition, it will offload and inspect SSL traffic, so early analysis and mitigation can take place for SSL attacks. It can mitigate SSL floods and renegotiation attacks, as well. And it can react to those DDoS threats/vulnerabilities where no patch is available. By using a single management interface, there are simpler operations and maintenance, as well as 94% less environmental expenses.
The increasing numbers of F5 customers prove their solutions are effective. Among their customers are large enterprises, service providers, government offices and major consumer brands. They use the company’s ADN technology to optimize the delivery of network-based applications and get improved security, performance, availability of servers, data storage devices, and other network resources.
With DDoS threats lurking, solutions from F5 make sense to organizations worldwide.
