There is no denying the popularity of Microsoft (News - Alert) SharePoint in enterprises. Microsoft says that its web applications platform—typically used as an intranet portal for thing like content and document management and increasingly integrated with other collaboration, Microsoft solutions suites, web-based tools and things like ERP and CRM solutions from a variety of vendors—is used by roughly 75 percent of Fortune 500 companies. With over 36 million licenses sold, its value seems indisputable. However, the question arises as to whether its value is being optimized for a multi-channel social media world where video is becoming increasingly important. This is not just for improved internal interactions, but also for interactions with ecosystem partners with benefits ultimately flowing to improving customer experiences.
Since its introduction in 2001, Microsoft has invested heavily in increasing the versatility of SharePoint. Nevertheless, many believe that while widely deployed in some respects the portal is being underutilized since despite its expanded capabilities most enterprises still use it for its original purpose as a place to store and share documents.
All of this is changing. In fact, one way to look at SharePoint is as a slumbering giant, and leading edge enterprises are starting to appreciate this and are exploring ways to entice individual employees and lines of business (LOBs) to take advantage of enhanced capabilities and what such usage commonplace based on the value provided. As noted, one way enterprises are re-invigorating their users’ interest in putting more reliance in SharePoint is via incorporation of social media and video capabilities.
