Cybersecurity a Major Topic at AIAA Aviation 2013

Aviation aficionados can expect cybersecurity to be a big topic at this year’s AIAA Aviation 2013. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Aviation forum will take place this year from August 12 to 14 in Los Angeles, Calif., at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

The forum aims to display recent breakthroughs in the aeronautic and aviation industries, discuss new initiatives and address key issues facing professionals in these fields. Opportunities for exchange in the aviation world, particularly those due to forums and Internet connectivity, allow the prospect of growth in efficiency and information—the forum will discuss this potential, and the challenges that come along with it.

One panel of particular interest this year is the discussion titled “Overview of the Threat Landscape.” This panel takes place at 3 p.m. on August 12, and consists of a series of expert lectures on cybersecurity. Panelists include founder and CEO Jeffrey Carr, the author of “Inside Cyber Warfare: Mapping the Cyber Underworld,” Taia Global’s chief threat analyst Emilio Iasiello, and iSight Partners’ Barbara Endicott-Popovsky and Remy Baumgard. Moderated by David Shaw, the CEO of Global Business Analysis, the panel is packed with a diverse group of experts and will likely yield interesting results.

Speakers on August 13 include Richard Clarke, the CEO of Good Harbor Risk Management and author of New York Times bestselling book “Cyberwar: The Next Threat to National Security and What To Do About It.” He will deliver a lecture on potential losses to commercial aviation and society through cyber attack, offering a number of research-based solutions. This lecture is followed by a discussion called “The Connectivity and Cyber Security Challenges.”

Both panels aim to showcase research and provide a forum for discussion about both the benefits and challenges of a more extensively connected world. The panels further hope to provide resources and safeguard instructions against cyber attack threats, as means of prevention rather than repair. Among the many speaking during this panel, Paul Kurtz of CyberPoint International and Dominic Nessi, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, will be present.
