Tate and Upsite Technologies Publish White Paper

While designing and constructing a new data center, builders should take extra care to cater to its special requirements. A good design can add to the profitability of a data center.

Upsite Technologies has announced its partnership with Tate to publish a white paper that focuses on the importance of Specifying Air-Sealing Grommets in New Data Center Design and Construction. The white paper is titled “Six Reasons to Specify Air-Sealing Grommets in the Design of a New Data Center.”

The paper stresses how critical it is to include air-sealing grommets in the design of a new data center. Although air-sealing grommets need to be installed along with the raised floor at time of construction, few do that. In fact, grommets are forgotten even after construction and this can be a costly mistake, says the paper.

“It is critical for our industry to take any and all steps to seal these openings,” said Ken Brill, founder of Uptime Institute and Upsite Technologies. “This includes new builds. Organizations and data center architects need to commit to specifying cable cutout grommets in new raised floor space. To get ahead of the problem, proactively seal these openings during the initial construction of the data center. Don’t wait until later.”

But when the initial construction is done, cutout location is usually not known. This happens because the equipment will not be in place. To counter this, Tate ensures that the cutout will be in the proper location under any size or shape rack.

KoldLok Grommets provided by Upsite take away the bypass airflow. By doing this, they enhance capacity, facilitate higher density, and considerably lower energy consumption. It also saves considerably on operating costs.

In 2009, the company hosted an LG-sponsored four-person team of university students from Korea, Eco²st, searching the best way to construct a green data center.
