Intel (News
- Alert) has long been one of those companies that industry insiders believed could drive the tablet market. The announcement of the Bay Trail chip that is specially designed for tablets seems to underline the power that the company could have in the very near future. The company let details slip about this newest chip, along with the news that the chip would be ready for operation for tablets that are coming out this holiday season.
The new chip will look to strengthen the stand Intel has in the tablet building market thanks to some old reliable features and a few brand new ones. The Bay Trail will have a quad core base that is expected to double the performance of chips from the previous generation. Bay Trail boasts 22nm Silvermont Architecture, which means that it will operate at speeds that other tablets can only hope to hang with.
Hermann Eul, the general manager of Internet Mobile and Communications department unveiled Bay Trail in Taipei last week. He said that this chip especially will show off the company’s goal of bringing better media content thanks to improved graphics. Eul also said that Bay Trail would be able to offer as much as three times the graphical output that previous generations of the company’s chips have been able to offer.
There will also be an increased security function as the chip will incorporate McAfee (News

Perhaps most exciting for potential tablet owners is that this chip will be compatible with a number of different operating systems. Bay Trail is the first time that Intel has not made a chip that was exclusive to one operating system.
