Akamai Technologies Announces Availability of Aura Lumen and Aura Spectra

Akamai Technologies reportedly launched Aura Lumen and Aura Spectra solutions, which will be available to users as part of its Aura Network Solutions (News - Alert) family of Operator CDN (OCDN) technologies.

According to Akamai, its Aura Network Solutions is a line of managed and licensed CDN offerings designed specifically for network operators to build their own Operator CDN capabilities, allowing them to monetize their network and reduce costs. These solutions also equip network operators with the ability to deploy CDN capabilities and capacity inside their networks, creating opportunities to offer CDN services to their customers, utilize CDN services for their own applications, and offload traffic from OTT services.

The newly unveiled Aura Lumen provides a network operator with a highly scalable media CDN for multi-screen video services, large object delivery and HTTP caching. It can be deployed to build and operate a CDN that is capable of efficiently delivering its own content along with content from other targeted OTT services via a common HTTP caching infrastructure.

The Aura Spectra can be installed to realize a highly scalable, completely turnkey media CDN that leverages the same CDN techniques used by Akamai (News - Alert), but on servers powering network operator’s services. The solution lets operators to focus on their business while relying on CDN experts and proven technology for content provisioning, delivery and reporting.

Mick Scully, vice president and general manager of Carrier Products Division at Akamai, commented, “The value of CDNs is very clear to the operator community, but requires reduction of technical complexity and a means to effectively deliver ‘off network’ content to their customers. Through our Aura Network Solutions we're able to provide operators with new ways to take advantage of the IP media revolution, evolve their business models and attract and keep new subscribers. And we’re doing it in a way that’s intended to be as flexible and cost effective as possible.”
