By Ashok BindraTo strengthen its roadmap for connecting the new enterprise, data integration company MuleSoft has acquired ProgrammableWeb from Alcatel-Lucent (News
- Alert), which effectively marks the telecom company’s exit from a core API community. According to MuleSoft, ProgrammableWeb is a popular destination used by developers worldwide to help build Web, mobile and other connected applications through APIs.
As the pioneering authority on open APIs and the most visited destination for APIs, ProgrammableWeb has the world’s largest and most active community of API developers and consumers, said MuleSoft. The company believes that the acquisition of ProgrammableWeb furthers MuleSoft’s mission to revolutionize the way the world connects, extending the Anypoint Platform and creating the easiest and most complete way to connect any application, any data source and any API, across the entire cloud and on-premise continuum.
MuleSoft plans to integrate its APIhub with ProgrammableWeb’s API database and rich editorial focus on the correlating market space. For ProgrammableWeb, it provides a stable home, a place where it can extend its API database to a community that can build out apps using the MuleSoft APIhub platform, added MuleSoft.
In a statement, John Musser, founder of ProgrammableWeb, said, “Now with MuleSoft’s and ProgrammableWeb’s combined expertise in APIs, we can do so much more to help developers to get the most from APIs. We have been the leading voice in the API community since 2005, and we’re excited about this big step forward in our evolution.”
Reports indicate that ProgrammableWeb will continue to maintain its API database as well as remain an independent entity and connect with the MuleSoft APIhub. With this acquisition, MuleSoft said that the combined API directories of APIhub and ProgrammableWeb form the world’s largest and most complete repository of APIs. As a standalone business unit within MuleSoft, ProgrammableWeb will continue to serve as the leading independent voice in the API community.
Commenting on this deal, MuleSoft’s president and CEO Greg Schott said that APIs are the catalyst for a new era of hyper-connectivity, and our acquisition of ProgrammableWeb underscores our commitment to connect the new enterprise. “Together with ProgrammableWeb, extending our platform to give customers and developers a single, authoritative voice on APIs and a centralized venue for resources that enables developers and companies to fully embrace the API phenomenon,” noted Schott.
