GMO Cloud K.K., Exit Games Collaborate to Bring Photon Cloud to Japan

Japanese IT infrastructure provider GMO Cloud K.K. has teamed up with Exit Games GmbH, a German game engine company, to bring SaaS (News - Alert) network engine Photon Cloud to the Japanese market.

Photon Cloud is a development framework that provides the ability to build scalable multi-player games and applications that are compatible with PCs and Macs, along with browsers, mobile devuces and cross-platform development. One of its major offerings is its tight integration with Unity Technologies, Inc.'s cross-platform game engine Unity, which enables video games to be developed for web plugins, desktops platforms, consoles and mobile devices.

“Photon Cloud is the leading Realtime Network Engine as a Service used by more than 20,000 developers," said Christof Wegmen, co-founder, CEO and CTO of Exit Games. "We had noticed many leading Japanese game developers using Photon and so decided to partner with GMO Cloud to release a Japanese version. We chose GMO Cloud because of their independent AAA rating as a cloud hosting provider and their dedication to the game development community.”

The partnership between the two companies is directly in line with GMO Cloud's Japan Market Entry Incubation Program, which was launched last year to help technology ventures enter into the Japanese market. To assist Exit Games in creating a Japanese version of Photon Cloud, GMO Cloud has offered the company IaaS public cloud hosting, Japanese localization of the Photon Cloud website, UI and user documentation, marketing and user support.

Japan's interest in Photon Cloud is said to have emerged a while ago.

“The Photon Cloud service had been receiving a very high level of interest from Japanese game developers even before the start of the Japanese service," said Hiroki Ohmae, Japan general manager at Unity Technologies Japan, LLC., who can quickly try it immediately for free. “The advantage of Photon Cloud is that there is no need for upfront expenditure on server-side development infrastructure to create a prototype of a network game, and it can be scaled up as needed in actual production. The Photon Japan service is operated by leading service vendor, GMO Cloud, which adds to the friendliness, the support, high performance and reliability that is expected in Japan, and offering a great choice for developers.”

The Japanese version of Photon Cloud is expected to be released Monday, April 15th.
