STEC Introduces s230 Series of Slim SATA Solid-State-Drives

STEC has announced the small-form-factor s230 Series of Slim SATA solid-state drives, which provide a storage design tailored for embedded systems.

Heat dissipation is a key concern in highly integrated systems, noted Scott Phillips, senior manager for product marketing at STEC, adding that the s230 Series offers the best solution for these systems.

The s230 is a small-footprint, serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) drive. It is in the MO-297 format, which is the JEDEC standard which “defines the layout, connector positions and physical dimensions for a 54mm x 39mm solid state drive (SSD) with SATA connector,” according to SearchSolidStateStorage.

This new device is less than half the size of a standard 2.5-inch drive. Moreover, it secures STEC's line of industrial-grade embedded solid-state-storage solutions, featuring SATA and SATA-II SSDs and capacities of up to 50GB.

Additionally, s230 comes with advanced PowerSafe Technology, which is expected to make it an ideal low power drive for space-constrained systems. In these systems, unexpected power loss leads to drive corruption and protection against it is quite crucial for optimal performance, said company officials.

Company officials said that its latest offering will benefit space constrained, fan-less system designs, especially those designs that have large traditional storage solutions.

Available from 8GB to 32GB format, s230 drives fills the growing need for small-format SATA SSD solutions in both the integrator and OEM markets. The s230 Series has been designed as a solution for embedded uses. These uses include system booting; applications serves, code storage and data logging.

Leveraging STEC’s industrial-grade SSD controllers and flash management, the s230 Series is able to provide embedded system designers with true plug-n-play storage devices, short design cycles and fast time to market.

The STEC s230 Series of Slim SATA SSDs are sampling now. “Through this product line, we are happy to extend our long track record of supporting the embedded markets,” Phillips said.

Santa Ana, Calif. Based STEC is a global provider of enterprise-class SSD technologies and solutions tailored to meet the high-performance, high-reliability and high-endurance needs of today's data-intensive server and storage platforms.

Earlier last year in November, the company demonstrated a joint SSD-based, high-availability direct-attached storage (HA-DAS) solution, in collaboration with Mellanox (News - Alert) Technologies and DataON Storage.
