Boxee TV Selects the Opera Devices SDK for Apps and Browsers

What will you do to celebrate Christmas?  Some people will eat turkey with family and friends, exchange gifts, or go to church and sing songs. Many will also watch one of hundreds of Christmas movies and videos available.

To help consumers enjoy more TV shows, movies and online video this Christmas, Opera Software has announced a partnership with Boxee (News - Alert).

Boxee TV is enhancing the HTML5 experience by deploying Opera Devices’ Software Development Kit (SDK). The Opera Devices SDK will now power Boxee’s new streaming media player, bringing a range of HTML5 apps for Facebook, YouTube (News - Alert), Spotify, Vimeo and more to its set-top boxes.

Opera is best known for its mobile and desktop browsers — which have more than 275 million users — but its smart TV business is developing too. The Opera-powered Boxee TV is currently available throughout the United States in Walmart retail locations and at www.boxee.tv.

“In our world, content is king. Using Opera enabled us to add a lot of Apps to Boxee TV without a lot of effort on our part,” said Tom Sella, COO of Boxee, in a statement. “In addition, working with Opera ensures our content library is well positioned to grow as more companies create HTML5 Apps.”

Boxee’s DVR and broadcast TV channels to the mix, and the Opera-powered Boxee TV has become a perfect gift for the holidays – all for under $100.

“All I want for Christmas is more TV shows, movies and online video,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software (News - Alert). “’Tis the season to give and receive, and finding a Boxee TV powered by Opera under the tree will make all those dreams come true.”
