Cloud Experts Say it's Great for Work, Not for Personal Data

If you were to ask three IT professionals about cloud services and security, you’ll probably get five different answers. If you survey a large group, however, you might find some interesting data. That’s what Lieberman Software Corporation did, and the survey uncovered some information of interest.

Believe it or not, IT experts who focus on the cloud don’t always trust the cloud for sensitive information. When it comes to communication, SaaS (News - Alert), and so on, the cloud is very useful, but when it comes to personal data, a little over half of them prefer to keep it on their own devices. 86 percent of the IT experts don’t trust the cloud for storing sensitive data, fearing that it could be lost, corrupted, or accessed by someone without authorization.

However, just under half of the respondents still feel that moving to the cloud has improved their IT security. In spite of the risk, many still feel that their data is safer as a result, which may seem contradictory, but it is the knowledge of the risks that drive people to implement solutions to protect their data.

In the end, nearly all of the respondents feel that moving to cloud services has made things far more convenient for their in-house IT teams. Slightly over half of them also feel that switching to the cloud has saved the company money, but even for those not in that group, the convenience of the cloud seems to be worth the cost. Almost nine out of every 10 experts surveyed feel that their organization has successfully deployed the cloud, and is benefitting from it.

If your company is using the cloud, that’s great. It provides many benefits, makes work easier for everyone, and is generally convenient. However, it’s still imperfect, as these experts know. There are still security issues, so sensitive data should be stored separately from it, as well as personal information. When it comes to work as usual, though, the cloud is a great place to be.
