Wind River VxWorks Picked by Ubee-AirWalk

Wind River, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel Corporation specializing in the delivery of embedded and mobile software, announced that Ubee-AirWalk (News - Alert) is using its VxWorks as the real-time operating system in its latest enterprise-grade CDMA femtocell.

VxWorks was selected for its rich network stack, security capabilities and specialized processor support to cater Ubee-AirWalk’s real-time requirements. Ubee-AirWalk’s femtocell is a part of Sprint’s (News - Alert) in-building solutions product portfolio, and is branded as the Sprint AIRAVE Pro Connect solution.

Ubee-AirWalk provides small cell technology solutions such as femtocells, picocells and metrocells. Small cells can be used to deploy compact wireless base stations that expand and enhance network service in high-usage areas, while Picocells and metrocells are preferred in public areas to make up for the coverage gaps that are not served by the existing macro infrastructure.

Residential and enterprise femtocells enable optimum cellular coverage into the home or office being part of in-building solutions. The AIRAVE Pro Connect enterprise femtocells enhance cellular reception besides increasing coverage and capacity at enterprises, campuses, government buildings and other public venues that have a broadband connection, explained officials.

Sprint is able to expand voice and data service to new venues with better coverage using AIRAVE Pro Connect. Ubee-AirWalk had to satisfy hard real-time processing requirements such as increasing mobile traffic and uninterrupted connectivity to enhance the user experience.

It needed a product to offload heavy voice and data usage optimally from a macro cellular network to a corporate network.

VxWorks serves all these purposes as a real-time operating system (RTOS) for the embedded industry. It features real-time attributes and security capabilities, while offering a rich network stack for Ubee-AirWalk.

“VxWorks was a clear choice for our enterprise femtocell as it is the most widely used and proven RTOS throughout the industry,” said Chris Osborn, chief technology officer at Ubee-AirWalk. “We’ve long worked with Wind River (News - Alert) and keep returning as they continually deliver on our technology needs as well as provide outstanding support at each step.”

Recently, Wind River introduced Wind River Intelligent Device Platform, a complete software development environment built exclusively for machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. The platform addresses the security, connectivity and manageability required for M2M device development.
