Laser Light Engines Secures $9M in New Funding

Laser Light Engines has announced that the company has received $9 million in venture funding. The company has also announced that it is expecting another $6 million from new investors. According to the company, this new investment will be used to further develop LLE's laser illumination technology.

Laser Light Engines provides laser illumination systems for fast-growing markets such as digital projection, digital signage, and solid-state illumination. Together, these markets provide an opportunity of $1B annually, and have been growing at 30 percent a year. Also, retrofit opportunities total $2.5B billion worldwide.

There are numerous potential applications for optical fiber-delivered solid-state illumination while Laser Light Engines is concentrated on the high-impact markets of digital cinema and large venues. Where lamp change is impossible and electric wire is undesirable, to digitally controllable remote spotlights with no heat at the lamp head, to new devices and products still on the drawing boards, these can range from high-end military applications.

With LLE's plug-and-play laser illumination engines, these markets can upgrade existing installations or be designed into new ones, the company stated.

“This new funding will allow us to accelerate commercialization of LLE's breakthrough laser illumination technology, which we introduced at the first-ever public demonstration of high brightness laser 3D cinema on a silver screen at the NAB Technology Summit on Cinema (TSC) in Las Vegas earlier this year," said John O'Hara, LLE's CEO. “As we enter this next phase of our growth, we also welcome Dick Post to our Board of Directors.”

Recently, the company announced the world's first public demonstration of fully-despeckled, high brightness 3D, high frame rate (HFR), wide color gamut (WCG) laser projection on a silver 3D screen at an event. Bill Beck, founder and EVP of Business Development for LLE presented an invited talk on Laser Illumination Systems for 2D and 3D Digital Cinema.
