Microsemi Teams with Emcraft Systems

Microsemi (News - Alert) Corporation has announced that the company has partnered with Emcraft Systems, a provider of microcontroller-based hardware and software solutions, to provide a miniaturized system-on-module (SOM) for embedded applications.

The SmartFusion SOM is one of a series of Emcraft uClinux-ready Cortex-M System-On-Module products. This member of the series is based on the SmartFusion cSoC from Microsemi Corporation. To make it easy, quick, and cost-effective for embedded system designers to start using the Microsemi SmartFusion device and uClinux software in their applications, the SmartFusion SOM has been specifically manufactured.

While the combined SmartFusion peripherals, FPGA fabric, and programmable analog blocks are used to deploy numerous communication interfaces and protocols, the uClinux kernel and applications execute on the 100 MHz 32-bit ARM (News - Alert) Cortex-M3 processor core. All Emcraft uClinux-ready System-On-Modules come preloaded with uClinux and U-Boot. Along with a Linux cross-development environment, full source code of the Linux BSP is provided.

Reducing the number of external requirements required on a customer's baseboard, the highly integrated SOM includes 16 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM (News - Alert)), 8 MB of flash, an Ethernet PHY, clocks and supporting circuitry.

“Emcraft's system-on-module with SmartFusion will accelerate our customers' product development cycles," said Paul Ekas, vice president of Marketing at Microsemi in a press release released by the company. "It will also allow our customers to differentiate their equipment with the lowest power solutions and very small form factor.”

Recently, the company announced that a new die packaging technology has passed an internal qualification regime. This regime is typical for active implantable medical devices which include thermal and mechanical stressing to MIL-STD-883 test standards.
