Arbor Networks to Provide Starhub with Security from DDOS Attacks

Digital security is an issue facing everyone a part of a network. Whether it’s your home network or large corporation, a breach will leave you vulnerable to different types of threats.

To avoid this threat, Starhub, one of Singapore’s largest fully integrated info-communication companies, requested the services of Arbor Networks. Arbor is a prominent provider of security and management solutions for enterprise and service provider networks.

Starhub is a company with a full range of entertainment, communication and entertainment services, including its own mobile hybrid fiber-coaxial and fixed business networks. The size of the network makes it vulnerable to attacks if the right security parameters are not in place.

This is especially true from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, where multiple systems are compromised with a Trojan to target a single system thus causing a Denial of Service attack.

If an attack goes undetected, it can overwhelm a network disrupting the operations of the business completely.

To combat this threat, Starhub will be part of Arbor’s Cloud Signaling Coalition (CSC (News - Alert)), composed of partnerships with service providers, data center operators and enterprises to make sure a network will be available in the event of a DDoS attack.

DDoS attacks are feared by every network in the world, because they are very difficult to defend against. The goal of this type of attack is to cut off the network from the user, rendering your site and business useless.

Large organizations such as Visa, Twitter (News - Alert) and Mastercard have fallen victim to this type of attack.

"Working closely with Arbor as a member of the CSC will help us protect our customers and earn their loyalty,” said StarHub CTO Mock Pak Lum. “Network security is an evolving challenge and a responsibility best fulfilled when shared by peers."

The system works by using the Cloud Signaling Functionality when a DDoS attack is detected. The network administrator or data center operator can choose to mitigate the attack in the cloud with the Cloud Signaling System by triggering an alert. The stream of congested links will shrink or disappear from the networks access links protecting the availability of the site.

Said Attley Ng, Arbor Networks vice president for Asia Pacific: "By joining the coalition, StarHub is demonstrating its knowledge of the threat landscape and its commitment to partnering with customers to help ensure businesses are up and running and services are available."

The approach Arbor uses to protect against this type of attack is invaluable to organizations with high volume traffic and cannot afford any downtime. The effects of DDoS attacks can be eliminated as long as the detection and mitigation is shared by many networks.
