Continuous Power from GE's New VH Series UPS

If you rely on the information you have in your personal computer or the servers in your business, an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system is mandatory. A power outage or surge can take place at any time. In 2011 a reported 3,071 blackouts took place in the U.S. alone, affecting 41.8 million people with top honors going to California, New York and Texas. What the report illustrates is it can happen anywhere, and you should be ready for that eventuality. The new GE VH Series UPS is designed to provide protection of your data and equipment when you experience power related issues.

The VH Series 700 VA, 1000 VA, 1500 VA, 2000 VA & 3000 VA offer voltage and frequency independent (VFI) double conversion technology, ultimately eliminating problems associated with power reliability. The failsafe internal bypass also allows for continued operation even during battery replacement and UPS failure. It can even be applied in mission critical servers, LANs and telecommunication equipment with optional remote operation or unmanned locations with the remote monitoring features.

A UPS is a power supply with a battery which maintains power when the power supply is interrupted. The system you use depends on the level of protection you need for your data and equipment. A standby power system (SPS) or line interactive UPS monitors the power line of your premises, switching to battery power when it detects any power fluctuations. This only takes several milliseconds to leave your equipment without power. Conversely, an on-line UPS doesn’t let your equipment go without power at all times, as it has its own inverter, which is always working, whether your power line is up or down.

An important component on a UPS system is automatic shut down if there is no one monitoring the site. The VH series have integrated automatic shutdown software with different communication options with standard USB ports and optional RS232, relay and SNMP card slots. Riccardo Rutili, product leader for power quality at GE’s Digital Energy business, said that “GE's VH Series UPS is designed to meet the high performance power delivery needs of both the IT industry and the ever-increasing list of power-hungry systems such as MRI machines, critical servers and sensitive, critical electrical loads."

UPS systems are not just for large corporations and hospitals, either. In today’s digitized world, everyone with a computer, high-end TV and home network need to protect their equipment from the thousands of power outages that take place every year.
