Sony Mobile Communications Unveils Reorganized Operational Structure

Sony Mobile Communications recently announced that it has revamped its entire operational structure across the globe. The organization’s new headquarters will now be located in Tokyo, Japan from October 2012. The current headquarters in Lund, Sweden will hand over all the corporate functions along with other functions to the Tokyo office.

Sony Mobile has modified its development sites in Tokyo, Japan, Lund, Sweden and Beijing, China by assigning roles and responsibilities to each site based on its capabilities. The organizations will therefore experience improved operational and development capabilities like time to market efficiency, streamlining of supply chain management and increased incorporation with the Sony group.

In a release, Kunimasa Suzuki, president and CEO of Sony Mobile, said, "Sony has identified the mobile business as one of its core businesses and the Xperia smartphone portfolio continues to gain momentum with customers and consumers worldwide. We are accelerating the integration and convergence with the wider Sony group to continue enhancing our offerings, and a more focused and efficient operational structure will help to reduce Sony Mobile's costs, enhance time to market efficiency and bring the business back to a place of strength."

Sony Mobile will be decreasing its workforce across the globe by nearly 15 percent in line with the reorganization. The organization aims to decrease its headcount by nearly 1,000 personnel by the end of March 2014, thereby augmenting operational competence, decreasing expenses and driving profitable expansion.

A redundancy notification, also known as ‘varsel’ has been filed by Sony Mobile in Sweden. As per the notification, the Swedish authorities have been informed that nearly 650 jobs will be cut by Sony Mobile across several functions at its Lund facility. Sony Mobile has however maintained that Lund will remain a key strategic site for the organization, mainly concentrating on software and application development.
