Java Setup Gets Three Upgrades

Java is the backbone of most technology – the kind of things we use every day without thinking about. It does not get big headlines, like Apple or IBM (News - Alert), but it gets the job done. Today, the company that makes Java possible on a large scale, Oracle, has announced a slew of upgrades to the product.

The first of the big announcements is the release of the newest version of the Java Platform, dubbed Standard Edition 7, Update 6.

The bundle, which has a variety of bug fixes from the last update, is now available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. Some of the updates in this new release include an update for the new Mac OS, adding an Alternative Hash Function and changes to the security warning dialog box when dealing with trusted signed and self-signed applications.

The second announcement is the release of a new version of the JavaFX platform. The new version, JavaFX 2.2, is designed to provide an upgrade to the, "...UI platform capable of handling large-scale data-driven business applications."

The new upgrades allow for support for both x86 and x64 Linux systems. The system also now allows for multi-touch support and added in a new application packager.

Java’s last upgrade is the first release of JavaFX Scene Builder, slated to be a visual layout tool for the JavaFX platform. The system will allow end users to drag and drop elements onto the interface and program them individually for a faster and more efficient programming experience.

For the time being, the company seems to be excited about the future of the releases and the Java products.

Oracle (News - Alert) continues to expand our support for the Java platform and now, for the first time, consumers and developers have access to the latest Java SE features and security updates across all major operating systems: Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac OS X,” said Hasan Rizvi, senior vice president of Oracle Fusion Middleware and Java Products at Oracle. “We’re also focused on improving the client Java experience with the release of JavaFX Scene Builder and bundling JavaFX with Java SE to provide better performance and improved usability for JavaFX applications, without having to install and maintain a separate product.”
