DocSync - Making the Mobile Like Easier

Anyone who uses a computer for a variety of document types has had the experience of wondering where they saved a particular document, PDF or presentation. When the individual becomes mobile and incorporates the use of a smartphone or tablet, the problem intensifies.

A recent PC World report examined what may just be the ideal solution to address this problem: DocSync. A free app, DocSync allows the user to browse, search for and even organize files into popular business formats, regardless of their location

To get started, a user simply needs to set up a new DocSync account and then provide access to Google (News - Alert) Docs and DropBox. The DocSync VM software is needed if the user hopes to extend this capability to a PC or Mac. The software will run in the background by default and as long as the computer is online, the user can access the documents.

DocSync developers do recommend associating a PIN number with the computer software as it will automatically apply it to the iPad app. If a iPad is stolen, thieves are prevented from accessing documents downloaded. The user simply changes the PIN on the computer. The PIN will be required when someone tries to access the documents. If an incorrect PIN is tried 10 times, the downloaded docs on the iPad will be deleted.

The DocSync app will move quickly as it doesn’t automatically move files like other cloud-based file managers. This app instead retrieves the file metadata when it connects to a device or server. The user instigates the download by summoning a pop-up menu and downloading the file to the iPad.

The only foreseeable downside is the lack of editing capabilities with the downloaded documents, even if the apps to support Office document editing are in place.

Paul Singh, chairman of DocSync shared in a TMC (News - Alert) interview, “We are seeing this thing going on with a lot of people offering you cloud drives and everyone wants to lock you into their stuff totally…as a user, I am kind of at a loss. My documents are in my email, my DropBox, my Google drive, etc. I use all these devices because they are free and easy to use. Pretty soon, my life on a mobile device is becoming harder.”

Singh joined Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) in the TMC newsroom in San Jose, Calif. To catch their entire conversation, check out the video below.
