Despite living in the age of smartphones, Internet, e-mail and wireless devices, many public and private companies are still using paper for documentation. There is variety of reasons for this practice including businesses or government agencies demanding paper forms or faxes as proof or simply because it is an old habit and integral part of our culture.
Creating paperless work environments everywhere is still distant dream for many organizations. Anoto, the creator of digital pen and paper technology, realized this in its recent survey which was conducted across the United States and the United Kingdom and focused on the state of scanning in business.
The company found out that businesses ranging anywhere from 50 to more than 200 employees across a wide variety of industries have significant scanning requirements due to a continued reliance on paper.
Why it is so hard to go paperless? Pietro Parravicini, senior vice president, area manager Americas for Anoto said, “We asked respondents if they would be interested in an alternative solution to scanning to ease the cost burden, particularly in a solution as simple as a pen instead of a scanner, Almost half of these organizations expressed interest in this type of option to revise current processes. This proves that although the paperless office is not yet a reality, businesses are looking for new more portable alternatives to current processes.”
When the businesses were asked about their numbers of pages used in a day, 61 percent of businesses surveyed stated that they use 50 to well over a 100 scanned pages per day. The average cost for scanning a single document is approximately 10 cents per scan and the lost time in productivity that it takes an employee to process each document can rise to many thousands of dollars per year.''
