Mellanox (News - Alert) is a company that specializes in fast interconnect, providing fast activity between servers and storage solutions. Recently, David Barzilai, vice president of marketing at Mellanox, sat down with TMC (News - Alert) for an exclusive interview, speaking about the company, its position in the space and its vision for the future.
Barzilai pointed out that, for the most part, in a CPU, servers wait for data and require I/O, meaning they rely on interconnect speed. Mellanox boasts the fastest interconnect speed in the industry, 56Gb per second. This means that companies can get a higher return on investment, with more applications on the same cluster. And this formula has been quite successful for the company, with quarter-over-quarter revenue of $88 million, with a significant year-over-year increase in revenue.
Traditionally, according to Barzilai, high performance computing companies tend to invest too much in CPUs, but not in fast access to data. And in the word of big data, where companies are fixated on Web 2.0, cloud and more, companies will need appliances based on Mellanox technology. The company provides 56 Gb switches at cost that is 80 percent of the typical 10Gb switch. This, according to Barzilai, puts Mellanox two to three years ahead of the competition.
Barzilai sees 100Gb on the horizon and foresees Mellanox technology deployed across a wide range of verticals. Right now, its solutions are used in government agencies, commercial supercomputers, simulators used by automobile and transportation companies and more. Financial institutions would benefit from this technology as well, said Barzilai, and Mellanox plans to take it to other markets, to deliver better return on investment to customers. And, when your company is years ahead of the competition, providing faster technology at a lower price, the sky is the limit!
