YottaDrive Featuring Data Direct's Storage Appliance to Harness Big Data

DataDirect Networks (DDN) has made available its award-winning Web Object Scaler (WOS) cloud storage appliance through the NASA SEWP IV contract via YottaStor, which is partnered with the Alliance Technology group to deliver patent pending solutions into the fast growing big data market.

The WOS solution, a foundation for YottaStor's YottaDrive system, is expected to help customers master the big data challenge by providing a secure, high-performance big data storage cloud to help maximize the value of  intelligence and surveillance data.

Given the fact that new technologies are emerging and massive amounts of content are being generated, the YottaDrive is being considered as a game-changer for highly secure environments dealing with data sets so large that they require a combination of localized storage and processing at the unit level.

WOS enables significant cost effectiveness, storage efficiency at the disk level, and reduced requirements for cooling and power. It is said to have been built for the explicit purpose of enabling multisite, global organizations connect and collaborate on data in a hassle-free manner.

"The big data era is not defined by the ability to store data, but by the ability to quickly extract actionable insight from that data," said Jeff Denworth, vice president of marketing at DDN.

Hence, the YottaDrive architecture featuring DDN WOS appliances supporting scalability to over an Exabyte of global storage capacity can capture, store and distribute any sensor data type and resolution to enable rapid decision making at any scale.

The YottaDrive mobile computing and big data storage system is currently available in three configurations – 2.5, 5 or 10 petabytes – and delivers cost per gigabyte over 90 percent lower than what many of the federal agencies currently pay, according to Mike Dillard, former chairman, CIA Information Policy Board and executive director at YottaStor.

Harris Interactive, on behalf of software provider SAP (News - Alert) AG, recently conducted a poll of C-level executives concerning their opinions about big data. The information collected from the survey suggests that SMBs, even more than larger corporations, are prepared to take advantage of the benefits of big data .
