Big Data is a Big Issue for Some Companies

When it comes to big data, there’s a lot of information out there (pun intended), and dealing with it can be a problem for businesses of all shapes and sizes.

A new study, issued by Capgemini (News - Alert), confrotns some of the biggest issues companies are having with big data.

The survey targeted 600 people in IT leadership positions, including C-level executives, senior managers and IT leaders, from around the world. The report showed that 58 percent of respondents were preparing to make investments in big data in the next couple of years – an expansion area that might help the recent slowing of the tenuous economic growth in some sectors of the world after the effects of the most recent depression have set in.

In North America, about two-thirds of respondents believed that big data would be a significant issue in the next five years, and right now 44 percent of people already believe the amount of data generated by the company, and the way that it is managed, is hindering the decision making in their organization.

“The exploitation of big data is fueling a major change in the quality of business decision-making, requiring organizations to adopt new and more effective methods to obtain the most meaningful results from their data that generate value,” said Scott Schlesinger, vice president and head of Business Information Management for Capgemini U.S. LLC. “Organizations that do so will be able to monitor customer behaviors and market conditions with greater certainty, and react with speed and effectiveness to differentiate from their competition.”

The full report, titled “The Deciding Factor: Big Data & Decision Making,” can be found on the Capgemini site.
