Formed in 2008 and headquartered in Redwood City, Calif., Lucid Imagination is a commercial software company that supports enterprise search products and seamlessly integrates Lucene, a 10 year old file system that can aggregate content for unstructured searches with Solr, an application framework that makes this system much more scalable.
As open source technologies are currently downloaded all over the world and used by a wide variety of enterprises, an enterprise search engine is now increasingly being utilized by major corporations who are taking unstructured content and building an application to type in keywords and find information that is addressable to the keyword entered.
Paul Doscher, chief executive officer of Lucid, said, “Think Google (News - Alert) for the enterprise. We have several different business models in play including our commercial technology called Lucid Works that provides a commercial license opportunity. Our company focuses on three things for enterprises: 1. to take better advantage of security as managing security credentials is important and we power a robust security framework; 2. providing access to information via a connector framework; 3. a search technology that provides the ability to contextually integrate applications.”
As information continues to increase quickly, with analyst firm Gartner (News - Alert) predicting that out of this information over 70 percent is structured and machine generated, building reports is no longer acceptable. Search technology can aggregate content of multiple types and offers users a platform where search becomes the best interface to display content for a vast number of users.
Doscher added, “Search provides a natural language query that everyone can use. It doesn’t require training and is extremely flexible, thus allowing access to many more capabilities and enabling search results to be displayed in seconds which powers a rich information development environment.”
Currently in the beta phase, is a new product from the company called Lucid Works, which is specifically designed for big data. In essence, it’s a technology stack that integrates Lucid Works with either a hosted Amazon environment or can run on-premises. Already seeing an overwhelming response from customers, Doscher stated that Lucid is trying to build a new level of toolsets that will provide an application framework that allows you to address a broad set of use cases in the enterprise via a single console.
Search leads to discovery and discovery leads to analytics which is being able to do standard querying and reporting. And machine learning technology means as you use it more, will get much smarter and allow companies to capture all searches and feeds back into ranking and relevancy.
“Now moving to richer applications can be developed for a larger group or ecosystem in a much simpler way with much more content,” Doscher concluded. “Flexibility and adaptability of the platform will help to transform it into an architecture in the enterprise where users gain access to vital information right away.”
