By Katie GattoWhen it comes to outsourcing, the general wisdom is that it is a one-way process.
Outsourcing allows companies to relocate certain operations to countries that offer a less expensive landscape in which to continue their business and work with underdeveloped economies.
These types of job moves, considered a cost saving measure, are usually done with manufacturing jobs or service-oriented work, such as customer service or IT services. In this case we are talking about the outsourcing of IT jobs for General Motors (News - Alert), which is actually preparing to challenge that status quo. Company officials have informed reporters from Reuters U.K. that they are getting ready to hire in the developed world in a big way when it comes to their IT staff.
The company is reportedly set to triple the number of IT workers they hire in developed nations over the next couple of years. The report received information straight from the horse’s mouth – Randy Mott, chief information officer for GM.
While the company did not outline too many details about the plan, it hopes that by moving away from outsourcing it will be able to show a cost savings. If the firm manages it, the model could be adopted by other companies. Interestingly enough, GM's latest news release was not about its new push to hire American workers, but instead about a piece of new technology in one of their vehicles.
Said the releases: "The diamond-hard technology that enables razor blades to shave closer and last longer also allows the piston rings of the Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine, available on the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze, to operate with less friction for better fuel efficiency and durability."
