Global IT Spending to Surpass $3.6 Trillion in 2012 Gartner Predicts

In its latest IT spending outlook, Gartner (News - Alert) Inc predicted that defying worldwide downward trends, global IT spending will reach $3.6 trillion in 2012, a 3 percent increase from 2011 spending of $3.5 trillion.

“While the challenges facing global economic growth persist — the eurozone crisis, weaker U.S. recovery, a slowdown in China — the outlook has at least stabilized. There has been little change in either business confidence or consumer sentiment in the past quarter, so the short-term outlook is for continued caution in IT spending,” research vice president at Gartner Richard Gordon noted in a statement.

In its report, Gartner predicted that enterprise spending on public cloud services will grow from $91 billion worldwide in 2011 to $109 billion in 2012. By 2016, enterprise public cloud services spending will reach $207 billion.

While, business process as a service (BPaaS) currently accounts for the vast majority of cloud spending by enterprises, other areas such as platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS (News - Alert)) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are fast catching up, the research firm pointed out in a press release.

There will be considerable demand for consulting services, which is going to be increasingly technology-based due to the rise in analytics and big data. This will have deep implications on the future of consulting services, the research firm pointed out.

Telecom service market is predicted to experience considerable growth in the upcoming years and as such the global telecom services market will account for the highest IT spending. Telecom services growth is expected to come not only from net connections, especially in emerging markets, but also in mature markets from the uptake of multiple connected devices, such as media tablets, gaming and other consumer electronics devices.

The Gartner analysts are going to discuss the latest IT spending Outlook during a complimentary Gartner webinar on July 10.
