New Survey Suggests Concerns in Regards to Cloud Adoption

While there is strong optimism regarding the current benefits and potential of cloud computing, according to a recent survey conducted by Dimensional Research and commissioned by Host Analytics titled, "Current Trends in Cloud Adoption: A Survey of CIOs and IT Executives," the IT challenges of adopting cloud technology are still a major obstacles. However, the majority of the 350 CIOs and IT executives surveyed agree that cloud-based business intelligence (BI) can help solve these issues caused by independent SaaS (News - Alert) applications.

"Businesses are investing heavily in cloud computing today," said Diane Hagglund, senior research analyst for Dimensional Research and the study's author, in a release. "Our research reveals high optimism and expectations among CIOs and IT executives for cloud adoption and value, but also hurdles including the anticipation that IT will end up operating cloud applications bought by other areas of the business and without input from IT. In overcoming these and other hurdles to adoption, good communication is essential, but not always existent. One silver lining: BI can help solve problems caused by siloed SaaS applications."

Despite the positive responses given from those surveyed in regards to cloud computing, only 31 percent described their systems as primarily cloud-based. For those that have already deployed cloud systems, 88 percent said they faced some IT challenges in adoption. The top issue found was the need to integrate data between different applications as well as knowing where the data resided. The majority of those surveyed, approximately 74 percent, said that a common BI solution for SaaS applications would add value and ultimately solve the problem of having important data in multiple applications.

Another recent Dimensional Research survey, "The Value of IT Communities," states that IT professionals are increasingly turning to online communities to get their work done more efficiently with 80 percent of respondents admitting to engaging in online communities.

In March, the research firm released a report regarding the growing trend in BYOD with 87 percent of respondents — IT professionals, managers and executives — stating that their employees already use their own personal devices for work.
