ICANN Cancels System to Decide Suffix Review Order

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a not-for-profit organization that was established to administer various Internet-related tasks performed previously on behalf of the U.S. government by other organizations, especially the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which ICANN now operates.

Recently, ICANN has cancelled the web-based system it set up to assist in determining the order in which it will review new address proposals. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers closed the system down indefinitely after confirming reports of unexpected results.

According to ICANN, delays in network and the system's response to "differing circumstances" were the causes of these problems. But even before the technical issues arose, participants had complained that the system, named as digital archery, was highly complex. People coming up with a new suffix had to identify a target date and time, and then come back to the website at that time to hit a "generate" button.

Given the volume of complaints, ICANN suggested that the suspension might be permanent. The digital archery system's complications are the latest technical problems to hit ICANN, which looks after the coordination of most of the technology behind the Internet's addressing system, the company stated in a press release.

This spring, the organization suspended access to its system for letting bidders submit proposals, after it found out the technical glitches that brought out some private data. That took more than a month to fix and restore.

Recently, the company announced that the Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) agreed that the renewal of Verisign's agreement to provide services as the authoritative registry operator for the .com registry for the term starting on December 1, 2012 up to November 30, 2018. The Verisign Board of Directors approved this renewal of the .com registry agreement on June 16, 2012.
