Helping mobile operators offload data traffic from iOS devices to Wi-Fi networks, Smith Micro Software (News
- Alert) (News - Alert) has added a new product to its NetWise traffic management portfolio. Named NetWise SmartSpot, this product helps to proactively inform subscribers about the availability of Wi-Fi access points and measure their Wi-Fi efficiency.
Offering improved Wi-Fi network discovery and access for iPhone (News - Alert) (News - Alert) and 3G/4G iPad users, NetWise SmartSpot is a client-based data traffic management solution. NetWise SmartSpot eases out the problems in Wi-Fi networks and keeps track of individual subscriber Wi-Fi usage levels and how they compare with other iOS users, the company stated in apress release.
iOS users now have the ability to know when and where alternative Wi-Fi networks are available with a NetWise SmartSpot client installed on their device. They can easily authenticate and connect to those networks without having to face problematic Wi-Fi selection menus and login procedures. By facilitating discovery of public and private Wi-Fi hotspots, NetWise SmartSpot helps iOS users better manage costs and improve performance of data connections.
“One of the exciting changes introduced in Apple’s iOS 6 last week is the ability to make FaceTime (News - Alert) (News - Alert) calls over cellular networks, but video calling can cause headaches to both consumers and wireless operators if not properly managed,” said David Sperling (News - Alert), CTO of Smith Micro Software, Inc. “Consumers still struggle to understand how much data is used by applications.. Running video apps over cellular is a drain on their data plans, as well as a burden on already congested wireless networks.”
Recently, the company revealed its intelligent data offload solution, NetWise Director, was selected as a winner for Product Innovation in Telecommunications at the TechAmerica Orange (News - Alert) (News - Alert) County High-Tech Innovation Awards. In its successful 19th year, this major business event celebrates excellence and achievement in the region's technology industry.
