License Management Goes Cheaper with ProtecodeCloud

In an effort to make open source compliance more accessible to any size organization worldwide, Ottawa- based provider of open source license management solutions, Protecode (News - Alert), has come up with ProtecodeCloud, the hosted version of its popular open source scanning and license management solution, Protecode System 4.

Along with the recently launched QuickAudit, the on-premises Protecode System 4 provides real-time license management and workflow approval functionalities to organizations looking to implement a complete open source license adoption and management process.

Offered as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS (News - Alert)), ProtecodeCloud makes the management and scanning of licenses simpler and cost-effective. It is essentially a cloud-based code scanning tool that allows organizations to manage open source licenses and obligations in the cloud, without having to invest in infrastructure and costly upgrades.

Being a hosted solution, ProtecodeCloud does not require additional software installation, and is free of any upgrade costs. Organizations can sign up through Protecode's secure website, and are given 30 days of access to ProtecodeCloud to scan their code, detect open source components and interact with the analysis reports.

ProtecodeCloud is suitable for any-sized organization, its maker claimed in a press release. The application is particularly suitable for those that currently develop their software in the cloud. Organizations can take advantage of ProtecodeCloud in a public or private cloud setting.

ProtecodeCloud allows users to automatically create a software Bill of Materials (BoM) that includes a list of all open source and third-party projects within their software. It reportedly takes a single click to generate reports on licenses, copyrights, license obligations, license compatibilities, security vulnerabilities and export control designations.

Lastly, ProtecodeCloud comes with the unique ability to read and create Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) standard files.

“It is important for us to have an understanding of the different licenses in our code base, and since we are moving more of our development into the cloud, it made sense to manage our licenses there too,” said Eric Kitchen, CEO at Toushay, Inc. “ProtecodeCloud provides a quick and accurate way for us to uncover license obligations in our code base.”

Toushay is a prominent provider of innovative solutions for enhancing the customer experience and service through the use of fixed and roaming mobile applications.

Protecode recently launched a code auditing service for small projects of 5,000 software files or less. Known as QuickAudit, this one-time software assessment service from Protecode identifies all open source and third-party code, highlighting licensing and copyright obligations associated with the code.
