By Katie GattoWhen I say the word research, what do you think of? If you picture hours in a library or men in white coats with test tubes then you are only getting about half of the picture. These days research of all kinds is dependent on computers for modeling and data sharing of all kinds.
One company, ECI Telecom, is looking to help one group of researchers, Deutsches Forschungsnetz e.V. (also known as DFN) to improve its research with a serious technological boost. The researcher is getting a speed upgrade as the company has helped Deutsches Forschungsnetz to improve its existing network and convert it to OMLT, X-WiN, a multi-terabit network designed to provide the fastest available services.
Jehonathan Neuberger, the managing director of ECI Telecom GmbH, had the following to say about the new networks creation: “As a leading worldwide research association, DFN must have the most advanced network to support its members, one that is able to provide not only today’s services, but also those in the future. The Apollo OMLT is a cost-effective solution that gives DFN the flexibility to add services as the needs arise, without unnecessary investments or added complexity.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Dr. Stefan Piger of the DFN Association when he said, “With the new Apollo OMLT, X-WiN will become a multi-terabit network. Complemented by the highly flexible management of Apollo, X-WiN then is well prepared for the coming data challenges of science and research, such as connecting computing and storage facilities or enabling data-intensive experiments in high-energy physics, biology, or medicine.”
